Parks & Recreation Maintenance Worker I

Salary
The minimum salary is $16.55 per hour.  

Job Type
Full-time Non-Exempt.  

Schedule
Monday to Friday (some evenings and weekends). 

Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for the position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.  

Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Parks Maintenance Supervisor, the full-time Parks and  Recreation Maintenance Worker is responsible for general maintenance and repairs of  Nicholasville-Jessamine County Parks and Recreation facilities, equipment, grounds,  and/or other labor-related activities depending on area of assignment, assist with construction projects, perform general maintenance duties, cleaning parks grounds and buildings, operating commercial mowers, landscape related equipment and assisting with recreation events. The employee must have effective communication (written and verbal),  and public relation skills. See Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities.

Minimum Requirements 

  • High school diploma or GED.  
  • Two (2) years of related experience in ground maintenance and construction.
  • Additional years of related education may substitute for years of experience.  

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Performs general landscaping, grounds maintenance and repairs for parks and/or facilities depending on area of assignment. 
  • Performs the maintenance of landscape and grounds in assigned parks, recreation centers, municipal facilities, and playgrounds, and improvement of City parks, cleaning of bathrooms and other public use areas and trash clean-up and removal. 
  • Participates in the maintenance and repair work performed in groundskeeping duties including mowing, weeding, trimming, debris removal, mulching, pruning,  spraying with appropriate chemicals, watering, removing, replacing, or planting trees and other flora, etc. 
  • Participates in the moving and delivery of equipment and other assets, as needed;  and assists with installation and setup at public functions and events, as needed and directed. 
  • Reporting and problem-solving maintenance issues, and recommends and implements solutions to provide safe, clean, and aesthetically pleasing park facilities. 
  • Participates in the maintenance and repair work performed on various projects as it relates to Parks and Recreation maintenance, new construction and remodeling of park facilities and structures. 
  • Assess the condition and needs of facilities on a regular basis through physical inspection and adhere to the comprehensive preventative maintenance plan for park facilities and equipment. 
  • Adheres to the comprehensive preventative maintenance plan for repair and/or replacement of playground equipment. 
  • Operate light vehicles, commercial mowers, small grass cutting/hedge trimming machinery, power tools, field chalk machines, field painters, field dragging machines and other specialized seasonal maintenance equipment. 
  • Assist in the maintenance of the Splash Pad(s). 
  • Develop understanding of applicable City/Park rules and report any violation appropriately. 
  • Setting up seasonal operations as directed (clearing trails, winterizing bathrooms and Aquatic equipment, cleaning equipment, and setting up sports fields, and completing rainy day job lists). 
  • Assist with setup, tear-down and the operation of necessary equipment and property related to recreation events, special events, and functions.  
  • Performs duties related to goals and objectives of the Department and related work as assigned.

Physical Requirements of the Job 

  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. 
  • Must lift light objects (up to 25 pounds); must operate vehicles; exposed to machinery and its moving parts; exposed to high places; must use ladders and stairs; exposed to fumes, chemicals and toxic substances. 
  • Light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 26 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis; or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy. 

Special License and Certifications 

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Must obtain appropriate pesticide license from the Kentucky Department of Agriculture (within the first six (6) months of employment.)

Special Requirements 

  • Must be accessible for on-call duty and be able to work weekends and holidays as assigned and during emergencies.
  • All positions require drug testing and background check before employment and may require a post-job offer physical.
  • May be required to perform snow removal duties during weather emergencies.
